Woods Yard Park is actually the front yard of MUNI’s large Woods Yard bus facility. The public space was originally created as a project mitigation when the yard was opened in the 1970s. The park has Dogpatch’s only dedicated young children’s play area flanked by two open plazas. The plazas are ringed with seat walls and contain a painting installation, “Dogpatch Blockheads,” by artist Dave Warnke. The play area is fronted by a small native plants garden. The park’s plazas host numerous block parties and other community events throughout the year.

 The popular play area was created by neighbors in 2008 to replace the park’s haggard sand box. Locals and visitors use this spot along the 22nd street corridor as a meeting space, to sit for coffee or a picnic, or as a rest stop among the local shops and restaurants. The plazas are a frequent activation site for Sunday Streets and the Annual Dogpatch Block Party.

 The SFMTA has primary responsibility for maintenance of the site. The GBD augments those efforts and tends the native plant garden. For the past few years, the GBD has illuminated a holiday tree at Woods Yard with solar-powered lights and ornaments.
